                       He ran outside, crossed the corridor till he reached her classroom and silently glanced inside. When he spotted her in the front row, he was amused. In spite of being late, she had managed to get a seat on the front row, as students seldom sat on it, in spite of the Professors asking them to do so! How could they see their incoming SMSs and doodle on their books’ margins, otherwise?

The Homecoming - Chapter 5

     She observed that her mother too, was weeping.  Trying to console her, Sudha said “I’m sorry for my outburst, Mummy.  I know you didn’t do it on purpose.  Let’s forget this incident.”
     And they did just that.
     Over the next few days, it became more and more clear to Sudha that things could never be the same again.  Except for her two close friends, Sanju and her parents, no one spoke to her properly.  It was as an invisible but tangible barrier had been erected between her and the rest of her friends of yesteryears.
     No matter how much she tried to convince herself that the people who really cared for her were all the people she really needed; she felt lonely, unwanted!

             Sudha then turned to her father and said “Daddy, where are your wits?” Her father looked at her, amazed.  Even in this grave situation, his Rani, hadn’t lost her keen sense of humor.  He laughed to relieve the tension in the air.  But Sudha noticed something vital lacking in his laughter.  It was a tension-filled laughter, not his usual easy-going, hearty one.
