The right attitude

Sumitra was slogging in the kitchen.  She had finished preparing the rice, vegetable curry, pulav, raita and fried the papads.  The major part of the meal, i.e. the chapattis remained to be made.  She frowned in exasperation.  That was the most tedious job, one which she hated but had no option, but to do the needful.  Her husband and brother-in-law couldn’t do without them.

Her brother-in-law Sudip had come visiting them for a fortnight along with his bubbly wife Maitreyi.  Whenever they came, there was lots of laughter in the house and good cheer in the air, as Maitreyi was a young and lively lady of around 25 years who had the knack of making witty conversation and engaging everyone with her jokes and anecdotes.  She even mimicked the characters in her jokes, making them seem like real-life incidents, though they were often concocted by her on the spur of the moment!  She really had the gift of the gab.

Sumitra’s daughter Bina and son Bimal just couldn’t stop laughing at her jokes.  They urged her to regale them with some more jokes; and then some more!  They just couldn’t get enough of the laughter that invariably ensued all around.  Her husband Partho also enjoyed himself thoroughly.
